Poets for Pussy Riot - Philip Terry

Seeing as there were over 30 poets reading on Wednesday evening, I thought I'd just select a few to say a few words about their remarkable performances, in the hopes that would shed some light on the evening as a whole. All the videos can be found here - http://www.youtube.com/fowlerpoetry

For me personally, Philip Terry is fundamentally one of the most interesting and important British poets of his generation. His work has had an impact on my own, and along with figures like Tim Atkins, Carol Watts, Jeff Hilson, his ability to reconstitute avant garde techniques from cultures outside England and make them indelibly English, and personal and joyful in this verve of experimentation is hugely gratifying to witness. Like Tim and Carol and Jeff he is also massively underappreciated in the UK at large. Perhaps it is consolation to those who know his work to recognise that his poetry is absolutely influencing the shape of the generation that follows him. His reading on Wednesday was the best I ever seen him give, immense in its restraint and intensity.
