“I find myself producing things I think forgettable, around ideas I sense are not.”
In this inquisitive and insightful book of essays, poet, writer and artist SJ Fowler asks questions of what it is to be a literary artist in this new century. Pushing poetry up against concepts like sex, violence, time, composition, collaboration and sound, Fowler funnels his own particular journey through writing into a select series of standalone essays which offer the reader a greater whole. Having become synonymous with a new generation of prolific 21st century British experimentalists, Fowler’s articles are accessible but intellectual, agile as well as understated, as perceptive as they are challenging.
The volume features nearly a dozen articles commissioned and / or published by Tate Modern online, The Learned Pig, The European Review of Poetry Books and Culture, Magma, Penned in the Margins, The International Literature Showcase, Atlantic Drift, The Poetry School and The British Council.
Two of the articles can be read online in previous forms below:
a Miniaturized Bulwark Against Being Solitary : on collaboration and poetry was first published in ‘Enemies: the selected collaborations of SJ Fowler’ with Penned in the Margins in October 2013 and then published online by JACKET2.
#1 For the Photographer’s Gallery, for my course The Written Eye https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/viewpoints/poetry-and-photography-essay
"An exploration of the intersections between poetry and photography is an act of defining terms. It is a process of identification. Of a question. But it does not entail an answer, necessarily. How does one align such disparity between mediums that can only be connected through recourse to metaphors? How does one move past the traditional alignment of image and word that tends to emphasise precisely this dislocation? To begin, we must ask ourselves what these mediums actually are, at heart, and then what they can be together? Finally, what is the purpose of their combination? What can they do together? And why is it relatively rare to see a cohesive combination of the two - with fidelity to poetry that isn’t just text, or discourse, or opinion, and photography that isn’t just pictorial?.........."
#2 An the introduction to Federico Federici's book, about asemic poetry and jazz Pithecanthropus Erectus (The article can be read with the Look Inside function) : 2018
"The work is remarkable precisely because it works in a graceful, familiar space to do often stark and unfamiliar things. Like jazz that absorbs sound. This feels to me a faithful act towards listening and the intention towards possibility and inspiration. The roll, the smudge, the dead signature. The cut in the scrawl. The squig. The line, cards and bled ink. Sounds on paper." - SJ Fowler and visit http://federicofederici.net/libri/

#5 An article on technology and abbreviation http://www.versopolis.com/interview/679/tech-the-consequence-of-abbreviation
The word sounds harder, in English, when abbreviated, than it should be. The sound itself contains a measure of threat. It is somehow onomatopoeic, the sound of something being struck, perhaps with intent and measure but not the desire to do catastrophic harm, or the sound of something that is supposed to be fixed above us, breaking off and dropping to a concrete floor. Teck. I youtube search for pronunciations in other languages. They are all hard sounds. Someone must be pronouncing it with a CH. Tetch. I believe the word, like the word god, has taken upon itself a quality that obscures our clear understanding of its meaning. We are responsible for it and we will get what we deserve from it. Or are we not? These are the untechnical questions of someone who writes poetry for a living, who has no utility but a daily, dirty sense of what language is and does.
#4 An article on sex and pornography. http://www.versopolis.com/column/656/the-sex-that-s-lost-in-porn
It is impossible to track the increased frequency of masturbation through human history into the 21st century. But it is likely that it is at its most frequent in human history. It has to be. Even the most self-loving ancestor of ours, be they 100,000 or 10,000, or 200 years in the past, could not have possibly imagined the kind of sexual stimulation that immediate and unlimited access to pornography provides the average person. There are, of course, more humans than ever before, the world population has doubled since 1970, and in western societies, more people are without a partner than ever before, in context. These are grounds on which we must think of pornography and its ubiquitous but resolutely underground presence.
